Title: Brightest Cluster Galaxies and Intracluster Light

Abstract: Clusters of galaxies teach us much about the assembly of matter in the Universe, yet up until very recently one key component of clusters has been missing from this study: intracluster light (ICL). The nature, origin, total mass, and even extent, of the stellar population that gives rise to ICL is little known. In contrast, brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) have been extensively studied, yet our understanding of them is still incomplete. We are carrying out a programme to characterise the stellar populations and dynamics of BCGs and the ICL, and the possible links between them for a well defined sample of low z clusters. Here we request deep ((mu)_K ~ 25.5 ) wide area K band images to complement our existing deep B and R data. K-band data is essential to enable us to quantify the stellar mass in these different components and differentiate between their stellar populations. This will allow a detailed study of their formation mechanisms and of galaxy clusters in general.
