Title: Study of the Evolution of the Quasar Luminosity Function using IR Imaging

Abstract: The form of the QLF puts strong constraints on models of quasar formation at early epochs and their subsequent evolution. It is also an important input to models of structure formation in the early Universe and on the contribution of quasars to the ionizing UV background at high redshift. Even though many large surveys for quasars have been performed over the last several years, there is still much debate as to the form of the quasar luminosity function, even at bright magnitudes, especially its evolution as a function of redshift. Here, we propose to image a subset of the SDSS quasars within specific redshift ranges in JHK to make a direct measure of their absolute M_B magnitudes. With this data, we can make a study of the average spectral index of quasars as a function of redshift and attempt to unravel the true evolution in the quasar luminosity function.
