Title: The Role of Environment in the Star Formation Histories and Chemical Evolution of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies
Abstract: We request 5 nights on SQIID+2.1meter and 2 nights on HET/LRS to probe the spatial distribution of stellar populations and to determine elemental abundances of HII regions in 20 dwarf irregular galaxies. The target sample has been selected to test for environmental trends: members belonging to the ``high density'' target set has at least one nearest neighbor within 200 kpc and are generally cluster members, while the ``low density'' control set are isolated to within 1 Mpc of any nearest neighbors. We wish to explore the possibility that environment plays a leading role in the regulation of star formation and chemical evolution of these low mass systems.
