Title: Searching for Gamma Ray Burst Remnants in Nearby Galaxies

Abstract: Identification of Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) remnants is important in establishing their true rate and energetics. The study of GRB environments will also allow us to understand the nature of their progenitors. We propose to observe selected nearby bright galaxies to identify GRB remnant candidates using narrow-band filter observations. The line ratios [OIII](lambda) 5007/H(alpha), He II (lambda)4686 /H(alpha), and SII (lambda) 6717/H(alpha) will be measured to identify GRB remnant candidates by looking for recombination radiation from the GRB's intense pulse of hard ionizing radiation (Perna & Loeb 2000). In most cases, the OIII and H(alpha) data are already in hand, and we need only add the HeII and SII data. Even before followup spectra are obtained (which we plan to do in a later semester), our census of candidate remnants will place constraints on the GRB event rate, ambient medium density, and GRB collimation.
