Title: Physical Properties of Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects
Abstract:
Possible evidence for absorption bands in the visible exist for at
least two Kuiper Belt Objects and one Centaur (Dotto et al. 2003;
Lazzarin et al. 2003; Lederer and Vilas in press). Medium-band spectro-
photometry taken by the PI with the 4m Mayall Telescope in March 2002
suggest a temporal variability of the Centaur 10199 Chariklo. We wish
to pursue this finding with greater wavelength coverage and greater
sampling. We propose to obtain optical spectra of Kuiper Belt Objects
(KBOs) and Centaurs, with emphasis on Centaur 10199 Chariklo and KBO
38628 Huya (2000 EB173). Our goal is to 1) obtain temporally resolved
spectra of Chariklo, and 2) identify absorption signatures in
visible/NIR spectra of Chariklo, Huya and other target objects as time
permits. This project could offer insights into the rotational periods
and the surface composition of these objects.
