Title: An Inventory of Disks, Protostars, and Proto-Brown Dwarfs in Young Stellar Clusters: Imaging with FLAMINGOS and SIRTF

Abstract: We propose wide-field (20' \times 20' and 30' \times 30') FLAMINGOS JHK imaging of several young (< 1 Myr) stellar clusters targeted for our SIRTF GTO observations. These observations will be a key component in an IR/X-ray/millimeter-wave study of young stellar clusters within 1 kpc of the Sun, with the goals of: 1.) surveying each group and cluster to below the hydrogen burning limit, 2.) determining the 1-24 (micron) infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) for every star and protostar detected in each cluster, and 3.) using the SEDs to compare the star and planet formation properties in each region. The combined FLAMINGOS+SIRTF data will provide a complete inventory of circumstellar disks and protostars in our sample of young stellar clusters. FLAMINGOS data alone provide a census of brown dwarf candidates for spectroscopic follow-up, and a preliminary look at the spatial distribution of cluster members. FLAMINGOS is well matched to the field of view and sensitivity of the upcoming SIRTF observations, and will provide complementary NIR photometry for all but the reddest SIRTF sources.
