Title: An Improved Luminosity Function of Cool White Dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Abstract: This project will obtain spectrophotometric confirmation (or not) of a sample of cool white dwarf candidates selected on the basis of accurate SDSS magnitudes and USNO astrometry. We use a reduced proper motion (H vs. color) diagram which we argue separates white dwarf candidates from metal-weak, high-velocity main sequence Pop II stars (subdwarfs). However, spectroscopy is necessary to determine our efficiency and contamination rates at various locations in H vs. color. With a sample of roughly 100 spectroscopically confirmed candidates, we can create considerably larger statistical samples based on reduced proper motions alone from which to construct greatly improved Galactic disk and halo white dwarf luminosity functions.
