Title: Establishing the mid-infrared selection of AGNs

Abstract: Since a large fraction of AGNs is missed in common UV-excess surveys, and even in radio, pure near-IR and X-ray surveys, we propose to select AGNs by their mid-IR emission of nuclear dust at T$>300 K. This technique might provide a new AGN selection criterion, not affected by extinction. Among 3000 high galactic latitude sources detected by the \it ISOCAM Parallel Survey at 6.7 (micron) we have discovered a population of extremly infra-red, mostly unknown objects. Various colour criteria from optical and 2MASS wavebands and the comparison with known object types leads us to suggest that we have, in fact, found AGNs with a pronounced mid-IR emission. In order to verify our hypothesis, we have selected such AGN candidates with unknown classification. Here, we apply for optical spectroscopy of these objects in order to i) establish their nature as AGNs and ii) to determine the fraction of type 1 and 2 AGNs among this MIR selected sample. Also, we propose deep NIR photometry of those ISOCAM sources, which have no 2MASS detection and could be ERO-AGNs, and to determine precise coordinates for later follow-up spectroscopy.
