Title: SMUDGES: A Survey for Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Universe
Abstract:
A unique, well defined, optical imaging survey will be undertaken to
determine the fraction of dwarf galaxies that undergo a starburst phase,
and to determine the duty cycle of the starbursts. The SMUDGES survey
will be the first survey with both the depth and volume to identify a
statistically significant sample of dwarf galaxies that is unbiased by
their current star formation activity. The survey is designed to answer
the following questions: Are starbursts in dwarf galaxies rare events?
What triggers the high star formation rate? And, are there intrinsic
differences between starbursting and quiescent dwarf galaxies? The
large, complete, galaxy catalog will provide an excellent resource for
both the planned dwarf galaxies studies and other statistical analyses
of galaxy evolution.
