Title: J-band Imaging of the SIRTF First Look Survey Field.
Abstract: The First-Look Survey (FLS) includes early-mission SIRTF imaging of 5 square degrees of sky with 100 times greater sensitivity at 24 (micron) and 70 (mu)m, and with thousandfold greater sky coverage at 8 (micron) than previously achieved. The extragalactic component of the FLS will uncover thousands of galaxies at z > 1, enabling studies of the evolution of starbursts, assessment of the contribution of dusty AGNs, and possibly the detection of new populations. In order to support the FLS ground-based data have been obtained including optical g,i, and R, NIR data in K_s, and VLA data at 20cm. Here, we propose to add J-band images over one square degree centered on the deepest part of the FLS with FLAMINGOS on the KPNO 2.1m. The J-band data will bridge the gap in the galaxy SEDs between the optical data and the K-band, and allow us to improve photometric redshift estimates. Our near-IR imaging depths are selected to detect and characterize both passively evolving L^\ast elliptical galaxies and dusty starbursts to z ~ 1.5, and the brighter objects out to z=2 and beyond. We propose these observations on behalf of the SIRTF project for the benefit of the astronomical community. The principal data products from these observations will be distributed via the WWW as soon as they are produced and verified.
