Title: Broad-band and H(alpha) Imaging of Galaxies with QSO Sightline Halo Probes

Abstract: We propose to obtain two-color (B,R) broad-band and narrow-band H(alpha) images of a sample of ~50 galaxies selected by having nearby (5-150h^-1_70 kpc impact parameter) bright QSO probes (V<=17.0). These QSO targets will provide the sample for a systematic absorption line study of gaseous galaxy halos to be conducted with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) to be installed on HST in Spring 2004. Before COS spectrographs have had too low throughput in the far-UV to permit such a study, so this sample will provide the first look at the following questions as a function of galaxy luminosity, type, HI mass and current SFR: (1). What are the physical extents, covering factors and metallicities of galaxy halos? (2). How far away from galaxies are metals spread? (3) What are the kinematics of very extended galaxy halos? The 2.1m imaging will be complemented by long- slit spectra from the ARC 3.5, VLA D array H I maps and, of course, the HST/COS R=30000 far UV spectra.
