Title: Indentification and Analysis of Metal-Poor Carbon-Enhanced Stars in the Halo of the Galaxy
Abstract: We propose to \bf complete a medium-resolution spectroscopic survey of some 400 carbon-enhanced stars in the halo of the Galaxy selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. The targets are a mix of canonical ``carbon stars,'' some of which are likely to be intermediate- mass AGB stars useful as tracers of disrupted dwarf galaxies, and the so- called ``metal-poor carbon-enhanced'' (MPCE) stars with [Fe/H] < -1.5, which provide insight on the nature of stellar carbon production in the early Galaxy. The spectra we seek will be used, along with 2MASS JHK photometry, for first-pass classification of the targets, so that the most interesting stars can be identified for subsequent high-resolution spectroscopy. We will measure radial velocities for the entire sample, and estimates of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe] will be obtained for the MPCE stars.
