Title: Masses of Galaxies and Clusters in an X-ray Selected Sample at 0.6 < z < 1.3

Abstract: We propose to obtain deep optical and near-IR images on the 4 m of the Rosat Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS) sample at 0.6 < z < 1.3. The RDCS is currently the premier sample of high redshift galaxy clusters and forms the basis of a combined Chandra/XMM program to determine the high-redshift X-ray temperature function, and a SIRTF/IRAC GTO program to measure the rest frame H-band luminosity function of high-z clusters. We will use the new multiband photometry to determine photometric redshifts to form statistical samples of cluster members down to L^\ast + 3. The ground-based images also will help to deconvolve the SIRTF/IRAC images, so that more accurate photometry in the rest-frame near-IR may be obtained from the SIRTF data. The combination of the KPNO, SIRTF, and Chandra/XMM data will allow us to study the relationship between total cluster mass and member galaxy mass in a well-defined, high-redshift sample.
