Title: A Redshift Survey of Radio-selected Galaxies in the SIRTF First Look Survey
Abstract:
We propose to obtain (and make public) WIYN/HYDRA redshifts of 290
Sloan-selected galaxies from the planned SIRTF First Look Survey (FLS)
region which have been detected in a deep VLA 20cm radio survey. Almost
all the galaxies detected by the VLA are expected to be detected by
SIRTF. Because of the unprecedented sensitivity and high angular
resolution of SIRTF, the FLS is intended to provide astronomers with an
early glimpse of unexplored observational parameter space. Having
redshifts available for likely SIRTF sources in advance of the survey
will significantly multiply the usefulness of the FLS. Accurate
redshifts and spectroscopic classifications will allow a statistically
significant sample of galaxies to be used to: 1) probe possible changes
in the radio and IR luminosity functions and star-formation-rate density
over the last 5 Gyrs in the history of the universe, 2) help determine
the AGN/starburst fraction and AGN/SB classification strategies early in
the mission in preparation for deeper surveys, and 3) explore
AGN/Starburst environmental effects in groups/clusters over large-scales
not possible with the smaller targeted SIRTF fields. Because of the
depth of the VLA survey, the observations have intrinsic merit, but they
are especially timely given the planned launch-date for SIRTF (Jan
2003).
