Title: A Determination of the QSO Space Density at z~ 5

Abstract: We propose to measure spectra for up to 20 QSO candidates which have been selected from our deep wide-field INT imaging survey data to have high probability photometric redshifts above z=4.5. At the magnitude limit of our proposed observations we will be sampling objects which are three magnitudes fainter than the typical objects which have recently been detected in the SDSS. We will use these redshift measurements to determine the amplitude, and hence the faint-end slope, of the low- luminosity end of the QSO LF at these redshifts. This will permit a determination of the contribution of typical AGN to the energy budget of the Universe around the epoch of galaxy formation.
