Title: Imaging of Dwarf Galaxy Candidates
Abstract:
Dwarf galaxies are central to theories of galaxy formation, the
distribution and nature of dark matter, the processes of star formation,
and the origin and growth of large-scale structure. Extremely low-
luminosity dwarfs are only detectable at very short distances, within or
near the Local Group, so very few are known. The first part (southern
hemisphere) of an all-sky survey to discover more has resulted in one
certain and one borderline new Local Group dwarf, plus a number of more
distant dwarfs and low surface brightness galaxies. Extending this
survey to the northern hemisphere, we have produced a list of
approximately one hundred dwarf galaxy candidates. We propose to
continue (and, if possible, complete) follow-up imaging of these to
determine their nature.
