Title: Rotational Evolution of Young Low-Mass Stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster
Abstract: The origin and evolution of angular momentum in young stars is a key element in the formation of stars and planetary systems, but one about which there remains many questions. Considerable effort has been invested recently in obtaining rotation periods for young PMS stars using spot-modulated light curves. The results are extremely difficult to understand in the context of simple models of early angular momentum evolution. However, samples to date may be strongly biased against the detection of slowly rotating stars, thus significantly limiting the predictive power of the rotation period data. A simple test may determine whether or not the existing set of stars with known rotation periods is seriously biased. We propose to obtain v \sin i for a sample of 200 stars in Orion, selected to fall among the PMS population having ages in the range 0.5 to 2 Myr. If the distribution of v \sin i for stars without periods differs significantly from that inferred from the already-known P distribution for the stars with periods, we will know that the photometric sample is biased.
