The Kitt Peak Experience… Like no other
SEE the TRANSIT of VENUS at KITT PEAK
Come to Kitt Peak (YOUR National Observatory!) for your LAST CHANCE to see a transit of Venus in your Lifetime!
The June 5th event is the last Transit of Venus for the next 105 ½ years. You, your children, and probably their children will never have this opportunity again.
At Kitt Peak, our Venus Transit Special Event will begin at 2:00 PM and stretch into the night. From start to finish, we will have 4 ½ hours of transit viewing, along with stargazing and many other activities!
SPECIAL GUEST AUTHOR AND SPEAKER
New York Times Best-Selling author Andrea Wulf will be signing copies of her newest book, CHASING VENUS, The Race to Measure the Heavens, and giving a public lecture on the Venus transits of the 1700’s. Why were they so important? How were they used to measure the size of the Solar System? Come along and find out!
In CHASING VENUS, New York Times Best Selling and award-winning author Andrea Wulf tells the extraordinary story of the first global scientific collaboration – set amid warring armies, savage weather and bitter rivalries. On two days in 1761 and 1769, astronomers across the world cast their eyes to the sky to witness a rare sight: Venus travelling across the face of the sun. The two transits were to become the most significant astronomical events in scientific history, as by recording the path of Venus and comparing results, these men hoped to calculate the dimensions of our solar system – one of the most pressing questions of the Enlightenment. Chasing Venus is told a race across the world and features a cast of some of the most recognizable names in world history – Benjamin Franklin, James Cook, Mason and Dixon and Catherine the Great amongst others – Chasing Venus is a thrilling adventure story, a tale of personal tragedy and obsession, and an inspiring account of Enlightenment science and man’s quest to understand the universe.
Andrea Wulf was born India, moved to Germany as a child. She lives in Britain where she trained as a design historian at the Royal College of Art. Her books include The Brother Gardeners. Botany, Empire and the Birth of an Obsession (which was longlisted for the 2008 Samuel Johnson Prize and winner of the 2010 American Horticultural Society Book Award) as well as Founding Gardeners. The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation which was published to great acclaim in spring 2011. Her latest book Chasing Venus. The Race to Measure the Heavens will be published in eight countries in May 2012 in conjunction with the last transit of Venus in our century. She has written for New York Times, the LA Times, Wall Street Journal, the Sunday Times and the Guardian and many others. She is a three-time fellow of the International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello.
Before and during the transit, activities will abound on the Mountain:
- SAFELY view the Sun through several solar-safe telescopes.
- See the transit projected live with our Visitor Center Heliostat.
- Learn how NOT to look at the Sun (a very important skill).
- Build your own pinhole-camera eclipse viewing box (bring your own box).
- Hands-on demonstrations of Moon phases and how they relate to Venus and the transit.
- Observe solar astrophotography in action and receive images of the eclipse via email.
