The Moon has intrigued people for thousands of years. It has been the subject of study and speculation; we have imagined the likeness of humanity in its surface features and sent humans to explore its surface. It has inspired scientists and poets, and both changes in the tides and changes in human behavior have been ascribed to its influence. Now the National Optical Astronomy Observatory offers you the chance to explore the Moon with our Lunar Adventure program. The program includes:
- A presentation about the moon and its features
- An introduction to educational lunar software
- Hands-on activity to illustrate the Earth-Moon system
- A list of resources and observing aids
- The use of an 8-inch telescope for observing the moon

Junior Astronomers—ages 5 to 9

Young children ages 5 to 9 are just as fascinated as everyone else is with objects in the sky. Unfortunately they have trouble staying up to observe the many celestial wonders in the night sky, so they can’t take advantage of our Nightly Observing Program. This program gives those junior astronomers a chance to observe solar system objects at a time that is more comfortable for them. In addition junior astronomers and their parents engage in hands-on activities designed to increase their understanding of the objects being observed: the Sun and the Moon.
- The size of the Sun
- Making sun clocks
- Observing the Sun
- The Earth Moon system: sizes and distance
- Jumping in one-sixth gravity
- Observing the Moon
Let your junior astronomers explore their universe at Kitt Peak and still get a good night’s sleep.
