Best of AOP - Diffuse Nebulae

NGC 6820

An open cluster of hot, young stars is ionizing the hydrogen gas in this region, pushing it away and creating the stem-like structures seen above. NGC 6820 is about 6000 lightyears away. The Eagle Nebula is a better recognized example of a nebula like this.
