NGC 6445: The Box Nebula

Click on image for larger version.

Not much information exists about this nebula. Aside from its unusual shape, which is probably partly due to our perspective, this nebula exhibits bright colors and extended nebulosity. These outer filaments extend 2-3 times the diameter of the bright inner portion. Perhaps the radiation from nearby stars are affecting this nebula's outer structure.

Equipment

Meade 16in LX200 telescope operating at f/6.3 and f/10 (bottom images and notes below)
SBIG ST8E CCD camera with color filter wheel

L R G B color production was used to create this image.

Luminance = 50 minutes binned 1x1
Red = 10 minutes binned 2x2
Green = 10 minutes binned 2x2
Blue = 20 minutes binned 2x2

  • One iteration of L-R deconvolution (sharpening) algorithm using CCDsharp was applied to the luminance image.

  • The bottom images were taken at f/10. The larger image is a resampled (2x) version of the original picture.
