NGC 5247

NGC 5247 is a multi-armed pinwheel galaxy in the direction of Virgo. This galaxy has the structure that astronomers call a "grand design" spiral. This galaxy is around 50 million light years away.

Equipment

Meade 16in LX200 telescope operating at f/6.3 and f/10 (bottom images and notes below)
SBIG ST8E CCD camera with color filter wheel

L R G B color production was used to create this image.

Luminance = 90 minutes binned 1x1
Red = 20 minutes binned 2x2
Green = 20 minutes binned 2x2
Blue = 30 minutes binned 2x2

  • The black and white image outlines the many HII regions that line the spiral arms.
  • A smoothing filter was applied to the color image due to excessive noise.
  • Digital Development (DDP) via Maxim/DL was also used in order to display the the very dim and very bright details of the image simultaneously.
