NGC 1190: Hickson Group 22A

Each of the fuzzy football shaped objects in this image is an elliptical galaxy. Unlike spiral galaxies, these oblate spheres of stars orbit the central mass of the galaxy not unlike a mass of insects (each and every way). These galaxies are over 100 million light years away.

Meade 16in LX200 telescope operating at f/10
SBIG ST8E CCD camera with color filter wheel

L R G B color production was used to create this image.

Luminance = 80 minutes binned 1x1
Red = 20 minutes binned 3x3
Green = 20 minutes binned 3x3
Blue = 40 minutes binned 3x3

  • The AO unit was used for this image.
  • The seeing was very poor (greater than 2").
