M43: Part of the Orion Nebula

The Great Nebula in Orion or M42 located just below M43 is most likely the most looked at diffuse nebula in the winter sky. This nebula which appears to be a seperate nebula is actually the same nebule seperated from M42 by a very distinct dust lane. Its distance is estimated at 1,600 light years.

Equipment

Meade 16in LX200 telescope operating at f/10
SBIG ST8E CCD camera with color filter wheel

L R G B color production was used to create this image.

Luminance = 33 minutes binned 1x1
Red = 6 minutes binned 2x2
Green = 6 minutes binned 2x2
Blue = 12 minutes binned 2x2

  • Two iterations of L-R deconvolution (sharpening) algorithm using CCDsharp were applied to the luminance image.

  • Digital Developement (DDP) via Maxim/DL was also used in order to display the the very dim and very bright details of the image simultaneously.
