Promotion and Tenure

Responsibility: Perform timely evaluations of the performance of the NOAO scientific staff for promotion or tenure review and provide a recommendation to the NOAO Director in each case.

Roles

  • Constitute a committee for promotion and tenure, typically 5 individuals, with membership from NOAO north and south, and from both the scientist and tenure tracks. The committee produces a recommendation to the NOAO Director for the following situations:

    • A review of a scientist for promotion (e.g., assistant to associate, associate to full)

    • In the case of a scientist-track astronomer, a review for promotion from full to senior (for scientist-track astronomers hired after 1992, this review must take place by the 10th year)

    • A review of a tenure-track scientist for progress toward tenure ("the fourth year review")

    • A review of a tenure track scientist for advancement to tenure, by the 7th year

    • Reviews the post-tenure performance of all tenured astronomers, roughly every 5 years

    • The P&T committee or a subset thereof may be asked for a recommendation on a variety of special issues, and to review the progress of emeritus staff.

  • Ensure that hiring and promotional practices are applied uniformly across all NOAO staff, in both hemispheres, for all genders, and all members of underrepresented groups.
