The NOAO Mentoring Program

Responsibility: Provide guidance and advice, especially to mid- and early-career scientists, in order to ensure a successful career in astronomy. Guidance examples include reviewing papers and talks, strategies for promotion and tenure, balancing functional and research commitments, balancing work and non-work commitments.

  • Helps develop short and long term goals

  • Provides guidance for professional and personal success

  • Helps identify where training or development may be helpful

  • Helps identify problems that affect professional and personal well being and suggest solution paths

  • Provides direction to resources for professional and personal development

OS Roles

  • Identify and train volunteer mentors among the staff (may extend beyond the scientists)

  • Publicize the membership of trained mentor cohort

  • Assist with pairing interested scientific staff with mentors
