We provide below some of the more Frequently-Asked-Questions (and answers) with regard to the NOAO proposal process.
Proposal materials, including detailed instructions for each semester, are available from our Web site at http://www.noao.edu/noaoprop/noaoprop.html. Forms and materials are no longer available by FTP or by email. We ask that all investigators first fill out some general, investigator, and run information on the Web form and then have the partially filled out and customized LaTeX template emailed to them if they wish (proposals can be completed and submited entirely from the web form, and this is usually the best way to ensure a trouble-free submission).
The current style file can be obtained from a link on the sidebar of the proposal home page at http://www.noao.edu/noaoprop/noaoprop.html or from our FTP directory at ftp.noao.edu in the file noaoprop/nprop214.sty.
In-line help links are embedded near each field. Just click the question mark [?] that appears on the form near each item for specific instructions regarding that field or topic.
If you have forgotten your login and password for a proposal from any semester that you would like to access write to us at noaoprop-help@noao.edu. We need to know the semester of the proposal that you are interested in along some information that will allow us to identify the correct proposal.
When used within the affiliation field (and other address-related fields) of the proposal form, the accent symbols \`, \' and \= need to be specified as \a`, \a' and \a= since some of these fields are in a tabbing environment in our style file.
You may use color PostScript files for your figures but be aware that we print the proposals on a black/white printer. However, color will appear in online versions of the proposal (proposals are available to TAC members over the Web in PostScript and PDF formats). If you feel color is needed to understand a figure, please include a short comment like "Please see online version for color figure" in the figure caption.
Observers should note that anyone who wishes to use a PI instrument at MMT must consult with the PI and obtain a letter of approval and consent which should be submitted by the instrument PI to noaoprop-letter@noao.edu before the proposal deadline. We recommend initiating contact with the instrument PI well before the deadline, and before any significant work is put into writing a proposal.
Please select "Graduate student, and THIS proposal is part of thesis" ONLY if the requested observations are essential for the Graduate Thesis. For all other cases, please simply select "Graduate Student" (e.g. if the student is in fact working toward a thesis, but this proposal is not essential to that effort). Thesis Advisors should be aware that a Thesis Student Information Form should be completed and submitted within two business days after the proposal deadline. This form is required for the student to be considered for NOAO travel support. Lacking the Advisor's submission by the deadline, the proposal will be considered as any other non-thesis proposal, and travel support will not be granted.
