JAN'S JOTTINGS ONE

( an email publication, partly or completely included here by permission )

Hello Fellow Arizona Senior Academy Villagers!

******************************************************

Introduction

My name is Jan Wallace. Born and raised in CO and NM, I moved to Tucson
from Silicon Valley, CA, last December. My current address is at the end of
this, pending the completion of my house at the Academy Village (AV).

In the absence of having an official periodic news vehicle, it seems to me
it would be nice to have some way of circulating news, opinions, rumors, and
whatever else might be of interest to some or many of our members.

This is NOT an official publication, and there is no guarantee that it will
be periodic, regular, or approved. I have constructed the distribution list
from the AV Telephone Directory recently distributed, plus the distribution
list for the monthly Buyers' Meetings. If you want your name removed from
this distribution list, please reply to this email with a request to that
effect and it shall be done - no questions asked. If you know of any future
residents who may want to be added, please pass this on or send me their
email address.

That said, what's next? OH - if you have anything whatever to add to the
next one of these Jottings, please feel free to email same to
janwalla@sprynet.com or post to the address
at the bottom of this, and that will be done.

I'll probably refer to our membership (Members of the Arizona Senior Academy
and/or Residents of The Academy Village) as "AVers." This is at least in
part because my right hand was recently incapacitated by a broken wrist and
still is not back to top typing form. (I'll also use this to explain
(excuse) various typos and spelling errors that you may notice from time to
time.)

==========================================

Editorial Policy

I believe in Free Speech, Free Press, Free Thinking, etc. I also believe in
my own freedom, so if anybody contributes something that I feel might result
in my incarceration or other discomforts, I'll not include it and that's
that. Otherwise, anything goes.

When stating my own opinions I'll not expect any agreement and will be open
to any disagreement, but I'll probably not argue because I feel that arguing
opinions is generally an exercise in futility.

So let's get on with it.

==========================================

Past Events

	JANUARY CONFERENCE
Held at the Hilton East, this was a successful, informational, and fun
event, attended by 60-some AVers, Future Avers, and Maybe Someday Avers.
Some of you will remember a woman who had a peculiar, faintly-weapon-looking
device attached to her right arm. That was me.

	BUYERS MEETINGS
There have been three Buyers' meetings that I know of: January, February,
and March of 2001. I missed the January and February meetings. Francis
Ogilvie sent announcements of them, and Fran Thurston wrote up and
circulated minutes. I personally believe all of us owe the Thurstons,
Ogilvies, and others who have been attending these, a big round of applause
and thanks for their volunteer interest and efforts.

	PALEONTOLOGY LECTURE
Pam Samuels arranged this (Feb 26) and deserves a loud HURRAH for that
effort. The speaker was Dr. Robert McCord, Chief Curator of Natural History
and Paleontology, Mesa Southwest Museum. He delivered a fascinating talk
about currently digs in and near Arizona, including one site not far from AV
itself. This was the first event held in the facility named "Enrique's"
which is our pro tem Community Center meeting place. (Location supplied on
request.)

FRIDAY LUNCHTIME CONCERTS

These are held in the upscale (NO college had one like this when I was in
college!) cafeteria at the UofA Science & Technology Park, near I-10 on Rio
Rita very definitely south of Tucson, and not terribly far from AV.
(Directions on request.)

The concerts are performed by music students from UofA. From the two
performances I've seen,. These are all music majors and participants include
graduate students and faculty. No "school-kid recitals" these, but rather
previews of successful future careers.

The most recent (Friday, March 10) presentation featured a group from the
Percussion Laboratory called CrossTalk. No mere bunch of drummers these, it
was a group of seven talented multi-instrument musicians plus an excellent
electronic-acoustic engineer. They made their collection of electronic and
synthesizer equipment sound like piano, marimba, xylophone, brass, guitar,
string bass, traditional drums of various sorts, and things I never heard
before. Most visually fascinating to me were two things called "Zen Drums"
which defy description except that they were red and looked like they might
have come from a Star Wars movie. The music seemed reminiscent of both
Caribbean and African to me. I don't think this was intended however,
because when I mentioned that, I got startled looks from the musicians.
Whatever, it was happy music and I positively could not sit still listening
to it. My toes tapped and my fingers twitched all the way to my shoulders.

(More details about this series available elsewhere on this site.)

=======================================

Future Activities

I've heard rumors of excursions to taste wine, observe and photograph the
blooming desert, and a possible trip to the Desert Museum. No details have
emerged as yet. Suggestions and facts welcome!

NEW+++++
FLASH ! ! ! ! Past, Present, and Near-Future, his just in from Mary Code:

        WILDFLOWERS OPPORTUNITY

This year is a wonderful opportunity to see the desert in bloom due to our
higher rainfall and cooler than normal weather. We (Marilyn Norris, Art &
Mary Code) drove the circle route to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument on
Monday, March 12. Our trip took about 10 hours. A much shorter version is
possible if you chose not to go to the National Monument.
Leaving at 8:30 A.M. we headed north towards Phoeniz on I90 and switched to
I8 just south of Casa Grande. We followed I8 west past rugged mountain
scenery to Gila Bend where we picked up state 85 going south through Ajo to
the National Monument Headquarters. It was a lovely scenic drive but not as
many wild flowers as the return trip from Why through the Tohono O'Odham
reservation.
We arrived at the Visitor Center around noon and had lunch under a ramada
with picnic tables. We then took a 21 mile circle drive up to the base of
the Ajo mountains. This is an unpaved rough road but worth the trip to see
the Organ Pipe Cactii, which are only found here. The Ocotilla were just
budding. They are numerous and should be a beautiful sight in one or two
weeks.
Coming back we took 85 to WHY and then drove east on state 86 through the
Tohono O'Odham reservation towards Tucson. The wild flowers along this route
were truly spectacular. We saw Mexican Goldpoppys, Lupine, Brittle bush,
Desert Globemallow and others along the way.
The long or short trip are both worthwhile. Be sure to take water and a
picnic lunch and enjoy yourself.

Web Sites

ASA Site www.theacademyvillage.com

dandy one! This is where you tell far-away friends and family to look, to
see the wonderful place you are moving to.

----------------------------------------------

Village Voices www.noao.edu/noao/staff/code/asa_web/asa_frame.html
    Created and
maintained especially for AVers by Art & Ev, this is GOOD! See for
yourself. For one thing, it contains the entire schedules for the
Archeology Lectures and the Friday Concerts. Please note that this is a
temporary address, and stay tuned for announcement when the permanent one is
set up.
----------------------------------------------
Holt Site http://homepage.mac.com/hdholt
Diane and Deone Holt have set up a
web site to share photos with friends and relatives. They recently added a
"Tucson page" to the site to let acquaintances, including many former
colleagues in higher ed, know about Academy Village. When they read in the
last meeting minutes that the AV owners had set up a marketing committee, it
occurred to the Holts that some of the early AVers might be interested in
seeing this. I've had a look, and can tell you it is one gorgeous site!
Don't just study the AV photos, have a look at pretty shots from around the
world.
=======================================

Odds & Ends
->- Many thanks to you who responded to Jottings One, either personally or
by email. It was your responses that encouraged me to continue on with this
one.

->- I'll be out of town March 16 - 26. However, I'll have the laptop along,
so keep those emails rolling in!

->- Do you live far away while your AV house is under construction? If
you'll email me your Lot number, I'll drift by while I'm out there with my
digital camera and catch a snap for you. Then I'll reduce it to email size
(downloadable in seconds rather than minutes) and send it along.

->- I'm setting the distribution list as Bcc (which means "hidden" copies)
merely so that you don't get the whole shebang in your face every time.
However, there is nothing secret about it.

->- I'm getting the impression that outdoor lighting around the AV is a
large issue with some of us. If you are one, then I recommend you let your
feelings be known by chatting with one another, and/or if you wish, sending
email here or to the Lighting Committee. See the March Buyers' Meeting
minutes for more information on this issue.

This started Monday, March 18 and continued on March 25.. Both weeks
it attracted 13 members of mixed gender, consisted of lively conversation
and general agreement that it should be continued. The first week, Luda
Soldwedel had a suprise "door prize". This could be fun to do from time to
time. There was a suggestion that everyone wear name tags, but Mary did one
better: This past week she arrived with blank place-markers for us to use so
that we can identify one another from across the room. I tell ya, folks -
that Mary is a goer!
We went around the table, each telling a little about themselves. There was
a common interest in music as well as other topics. It was suggested that
we bring newspapers to our "library room" (New York Times, Wall street
Journal, Christian Science Monitor etc) for others to read. Mary suggested
that we leave them there a week, long enough so that the Monday lunch group
can look them over.
I (Jan) wonder if tables for chess and cards would also be in order,
eventually. If we have time between all the other adventures, that is. A
couple of folks indicated an interest in bridge.
It was suggested that we begin to coordinate plans for using the Van this
Fall for concerts, opera, theater etc.
Anyway, we seem to be on our way to having a nice little institution here.

limit), so we may need to have two trips.) Contact her at
(joanizona@aol.com or 647-3799), to vote or to
ask questions. You can also watch your mailbox for a flyer from Joan.

NEW >>>>>
-->>>   PERCUSSION PERFORMANCES
You may recall my review of the CrossTalk percussion group performance of
happy music at the March 1 Friday Lunch Concert. Dr. Weinberg of the UofA
Music Department Percussion Lab has kindly sent this schedule of upcoming
events. I definitely hope to catch some of them, hope some of you are
interested as well. If there's enough interest in any one of them we can
organize the van for transport. Contact me via email or ring Alice Cahill,
647-7155 to register which one or ones you're interested in.
All are in Crowder Hall and all are free to the public unless noted

March 24 - 7:30pm - HOLLY SCHURR SENIOR PERCUSSION RECITAL
April 1 - 7:30pm - STEEL BAND CONCERT (you've GOT to hear these groups!
                   - I THINK that there might be a small charge for this one.

Odds & End

->- Cincinnati Report - I spent a nice week in the "Queen City," March
16-25. Cinci has one of the very earliest observatories, featuring a
telescope donated by John Quincy Adams, for which favor the citizens named
the hill on which it's located, Mount Adams. The city also has one of the
most respected symphony orchestras in the country, and a zoo which by some
is ranked second only to San Diego. Cincinnati never had any large,
polluting industries, so is a relatively clean city. It's also orderly,
which I realized after I'd been walking around for several hours and
realized I wasn't hearing sirens, horns blaring, or brakes squealing. They
could use some climatic improvements, but otherwise the citizens of Cinci
have much to be proud of.

->- This is TOO LONG! Future issues will be shorter - I promise!
