Farewell to Pat Osmer (1Sep93) (from the Director's Office, NOAO Newsletter No. 35, 1 September 1993) Patrick Osmer is leaving NOAO to assume the chairmanship of the astronomy department at the Ohio State University as of 1 October. Pat has served NOAO for 24 years in many important capacities. He came to CTIO as a research associate in 1969 and became an assistant astronomer the following year. In 1981, he was chosen Director for a five-year term. Upon its completion, he moved to Tucson to join the KPNO scientific staff. With only a brief interval of opportunity to pursue his research, Pat took on the task of leading the preparation of the NOAO proposal to build two 8-m telescopes, as Deputy Director of NOAO. When US participation in the Gemini Project partnership began, Pat acted as its first Project Scientist, bringing international consensus to the goals of the project as embodied in the Science Requirements Document. Pat Osmer commands the respect of the astronomical community for his productive research collaborations on the population of high-redshift quasars, for his maintenance of high standards of research and service critical to the unique role of CTIO in US astronomy, and for his leadership in defining and bringing to fruition the international scientific partnership of Gemini. We treasure Pat's wisdom, patience, good humor, and diplomacy as a scientific and management colleague. All of us at NOAO wish Pat and his family success and fulfillment in this new stage of life and career. Richard F. Green, Sidney C. Wolff
