It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Charles Prosser, who
passed away on 15 August 1998. Even in the short period that Charles had
been at NOAO as a post-doctoral fellow, he made lasting and insightful
contributions to the HST Distance Scale key project. He brought data
analysis skills that he used to improve the `toolbox' for others. He also
continued to work on open clusters, and with ROSAT. His scientific
contributions in these areas are clearly solid and enduring: of particular
note is his work on recovering the faint star population of the young
galactic cluster Per.
Charles received his BS from Ohio State University in 1986, and his PhD from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1991. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before arriving here in November 1997.
Those of us who worked with Charles remember him as a dedicated, insightful, thorough, and diligent collaborator, who made exacting demands on the data analysis and interpretation. In this he was an example to those who knew him. His passing is a tragedy, and he is most sadly missed.
