X-Stage Realignment

We have, unfortunately, experienced occasional misalignment of the dual drive, X stages. Some recent modifications to the motor parameters have hopefully eliminated this problem though we do not yet know since the problem occurs fairly infrequently. Such a misalignment will become obvious by making it impossible for the instrument to pick up large numbers of fibers. If that is the case, the OT should inspect the instrument to verify that the stages are indeed misaligned and, if so, should proceed to realign them.

Such a misalignment should be reported via email to the staff contacts and support personnel.

NOTE: This operation should only be done by trained personnel.

• Execute the gripout command.
• Set the brake selector switch to MANUAL.
• Manually move both X stages to the hard stops (about 3 turns clockwise rotation). If possible, please note which stage is out of alignment by counting the number of turns required to bring each stage into the respective hardstop.
• Rotate the brake selector switch back to AUTO.
• Execute the coldstart command.
• Report the problem to the appropriate personnel with how many turns each stage took to reach the hard limit and any other information that might yield insight into the problem.
