Setting Up the Hydra Simulator

The Hydra simulator software can be generated with the following list of commands. (Note that this software will currently only run under OpenWindows on a Sun workstation.)

• Create the required ``fiborg" directory from your home directory

  mkdir fiborg

• Change to that directory

  cd fiborg

  If a version of the program was already in place, the old files and directories should be deleted. Please make certain that you are in the appropriate directory prior to deleting your files.

  ``rm" -r *

  The quotes around the rm command will override any alias you might have for verifying the file deletion. You may also have to delete a few .* files in the fiborg directory which may remain after the generic file deletion.

  The .fiborg file in your home directory should also be deleted prior to making the new version of the simulator.

• Move the fiborg.tar.Z file into the ``fiborg" directory.
• Unpack the files and make the binaries.

  zcat fiborg*.tar.Z | tar xf - ; make

  Note that the space between the xf suffix and the - (dash) character is critical!

  This command will take several minutes (about 10) to extract the files and create the additional sub-directories. Two directories in the home directory will also be created (~/fields and ~/fiblogs) if they weren't already in place. If the ~/fields directory was already in place, be assured that those files will not be deleted or modified.

• Change back to your home directory and include in the ``set path" command of either your .login or .cshrc file the following path

  ~/fiborg/bin

• Move your target fields into the ~/fields directory.

  This directory may also be the place where you will want to setup the assignment program.

• Log out and back in to allow the new path to be activated or type

  source ~/.login (or source ~/.cshrc )

• The Hydra simulator code can now be started with

  hydrasim

NOTE: For those familiar with setting environment variables, it is possible to place the fiborg directory in a location other than that suggested here. The various environment variables are located in the .fiborg file.
