Collaborations Improve Capabilites of KPNO

As reported in the article "Collaborations Improve Capabilities of KPNO and Our Parners" in the NOAO Newsletter (Number 87) KPNO Collaborations, KPNO has entered into collaborations with the Astronomy Department at the University of Maryland Maryland Collaboration and Clemson University Clemson Collaboration that have provided significant resources for KPNO science operations. The initial focus of the KPNO-Maryland collaboration has been the production of NEWFIRM as a complete scientific system. Following delivery of the NOAO Extremely Wide-field Infrared Imager (NEWFIRM) in early 2007, the emphasis will shift to the WIYN One-Degree-Imager (ODI). The Clemson collaboration will provide KPNO with needed operating funds.

KPNO continues to form smaller but vitally important collaborations to further develop instrumental capabilities. Through these kind of agreements, we are currently providing time with the Exoplanet Tracker (ET, Jian Ge and the University of Florida) on the KPNO 2.1-meter telescope; FLAMINGOS (Steve Eikenberry and the University of Florida); and the Infrared Multi-Object Spectrograph (IRMOS, John Mackenty of STSci with the instrument being a collaboration between NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, STScI, and KPNO).

We are open to forming additional collaborations with teams interested in bringing their instruments to KPNO telescopes. Please contact Buell Jannuzi (bjannuzi@noao.edu) with expressions of interest.
