Making Sense of Chaos
Many interesting features grace Europa's surface, and careful observations
allow us to determine what geological processes created them. Mottled terrain
(upper right) results from highly disrupted crust. The smooth, gray band that
divides the image represents a zone where the crust has fractured, separated,
and was filled in with rocky material from below. The origin of the small
depressions and domes that freckle the landscape may help unlock the secrets
of Europa's interior.
