The Phoenix infrared spectrograph is shown mounted to the Gemini South 8-m telescope, with Dr. Ken Hinkle standing on a ladder checking the adjustment. The four massive legs sticking out to the sides are balance weights, required to bring the mass and center of gravity of the instrument assembly to within the Gemini specifications. For further details, see the March 2002 NOAO Newsletter (currently only available in PDF format).
