The Mayall 4-meter telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, near Tucson, Arizona, as seen from above. The primary mirror covers have been redesigned since this picture was taken (1986). Below the telescope can be seen the hatchway, through which large instruments, and even the primary mirror, can be lowered to or raised from the base of the building for work, shipment, or installation. The visitor gallery, from which public visitors and guided tours can look at the telescope without affecting the thermal environment in the telescope dome, is also visible at the dome floor level.
