The Hydra multi-fiber spectrograph seen installed on the Mayall 4-meter telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona. Hydra uses an innovative robot system to place fiber optic units on astronomical objects in the telescope's field of view. These fibers send light to a powerful spectrograph, enabling the astronomer to take a large number of spectra simultaneously. June 1992. (See also this Mayall image and this WIYN picture.)
