The control room for the Fourier Transform Spectrograph, an early and very innovative infrared spectrograph used at the Mayall 4-meter telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona. Dr Ken Hinkle is in the operator's chair. Photograph by Mark Hanna, 1990. This pioneering instrument was only recently superseded, after many years of reliable service, by the Phoenix spectrograph.
