Four of the telescopes at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, the United States national center for astronomy in the Southern Hemisphere, with the 4-meter Blanco telescope dome shown second from the left. Cerro Tololo is located in Chile's Andean foothills, at 2200 meters altitude, and is one of the finest locations for astronomy in the world, with a clear and stable atmosphere and skies free of light pollution.
