The Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory 4-meter telescope was once the largest optical telescope south of the equator. Located in Chile, the 375-ton instrument is a twin to the Kitt Peak National Observatory Mayall 4-meter telescope in Arizona. Each telescope can detect objects many millions of times fainter than those visible to the unaided eye.
