SDN0013
– Physical Properties of GNIRS Materials
Revision B
1. Introduction
The purpose of this design note is to summarize the properties of the materials used in GNIRS, for those properties critical to the design. A summary of the materials and the properties listed is given below, with the details provided in subsequent sections (SDN013.xx). Sources of data or models for the properties are also given.
The organization is by property – i.e. CTE is
given for all relevant materials in one note, refractive index in another, etc.
|
Disclaimer: Although the listings of properties are intended to be accurate, the GNIRS team, NOAO and AURA are not responsible for their use for any purpose by third parties. |
2. Materials Listing
Some materials may not have all properties tabulated if they are not relevant. Some of the materials listed are specifically not used in GNIRS; their properties may be tabulated because they are relevant to the decision not to use them.

4. References
Specific references are discussed under the notes for the various properties. A few were particularly useful:
The Infrared and Electro-Optical System Handbook, Vol. 3 (1993) is particularly useful, although it is worth double-checking any critical value obtained from it, just in case.
Thermophysical Properties of Matter, ed. Y. S. Touloukian et al.(1970+). This has the advantage of providing the sources for the all the information provided.
Cryogenic Materials Data Handbook, Air Force Materials Laboratory (1970), although a lot of the data are in graphical form only.
MIL-HDBK-5G contains information for some materials (in US customary units, but there are conversion factors given in the introduction). The edition is dated 1994, with occasional updates.
