Systems Engineering

• Two Main Areas:

• Prototyping and structural design provide data to refine analysis
• Avoid dual constraints (structural & thermal) on bench design

• Motor selection
• Phytron series 52 motor (same as NIRI)
• Motor characterization
• Established maximum power for continuous operation (about 10W)
• Established speed/current/torque trade-off
• Motor qualification
• Establish test procedure for motors when received (ensure motors are working prior to integration with mechanisms)

• Test reliability of radial & axial definition with thermal cycling
• Measure thermal properties (contact resistance, etc.) for use in analysis

• Test two primary drive types (linear/rotary)
• Measure critical properties
• Repeatability (use cold encoder)
• Microswitch performance
• Thermal (cool-down & motor heating)
• Flexure (warm)
• Friction (diagnostic; set motor parameters)
