The monstrous McMath-Pierce Solar Facility, dedicated on
March 15, 1960, incorporates a tower rising nearly one hundred feet above
the ground from which a shaft slants two hundred feet to the ground, where
a tunnel continues and additional feet into the mountain. The Solar
Vacuum Telescope, surrounded by lightning rods, stands behind the right
base of the McMath-Pierce Tower.
