Originally designed for students in the top 20 percent of the class who had a strong interest in science, the Science
Research Program in Woodbridge Township was expanded to include special needs students and others who had not previously
demonstrated success and/or interest in science. New techniques to prepare, engage, and motivate special needs students in
performing original research were developed and field-tested. A cooperative learning system where experienced research
students acted as project mentors for the new special needs population was utilized. The program was extended to additional
instructors by a teacher-training workshop for both science and special education teachers wishing to incorporate
student-facilitated original research into their classrooms.
