The National Solar Observatory (NSO) is seeking to fill the position of Program Manager of the NSO Synoptic Program. The Synoptic Program currently comprises two scientific facilities: The Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) facility, and the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) system. SOLIS consists of a set of instruments located at Kitt Peak Observatory, 55 miles west of Tucson. GONG is comprised of six instruments located in California, Hawaii, Australia, India, Spain, and Chile, with headquarters at the NSO offices in Tucson. While the position is primarily located at the NSO building on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, some international travel will be required. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree, plus five years of experience in management, including the use of project management tools, the development of budgets, and the supervision of staff. Desirable qualities are experience in technical or scientific projects, a background in a physical science, (especially astronomy or solar physics), experience in scientific computing, a background in instrument development, and familiarity with the National Science Foundation, NASA, the US Air Force, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
