Lighting Safety

Lightning Shutdown and Recovery Procedures are below.

Please be aware that the 0.9-m facility and you are in a high risk zone for lightning strikes. Remember that if you can hear thunder, there is a risk of a lightning strike.

You are not required to throw the main facility breaker if you deem that there is a risk of a lightning strike. Keep this in mind when following the procedure and do not put yourself, or others, at risk. (Running outside to throw the main breaker when the storm is upon you is not a safe thing to do).

The observer should judge the weather and decide if it is possible to exit the 0.9-m telescope site safely after the lightning shutdown procedure is completed. Please keep in mind the risks involved with stepping outside when thunderstorms exist in the vicinity. Even grabbing hold of the main door can be considered a risk! Remain inside, away from doors, computers, and phones and wait out any storm in a safe place such as the WIYN 0.9m house, KPNO dorm or the KPNO dining facility.

If lightning seems imminent and going outside unsafe, the observer should stay in the 0.9-m telescope control room. Do not use the telephone or internet connections, as they can conduct a lightning strike. Avoid contact with metal (doors, etc) and cables that could conduct a lightning strike. When is it safe? Use common sense and the following guidelines:
* If you see lightning, immediately seek a safe place such as the WIYN 0.9m house.
* If you can only hear thunder, suspend your outdoor activity and move indoors, preferably a safe location such as the WIYN 0.9m house.
* Wait a minimum of 30 minutes from the last observed lightning or thunder before resuming activities.
